Traditional remedy or use: Used as a contraceptive and snakebite remedy by Native Americans. Used in the tropics as an emetic, laxative, febrifuge, expectorant and to remove warts.

Modern remedy or use: Used in the West Indies and South America as an emetic, laxative, expectorant, to treat warts, and as a febrifuge. Used in the Caribbean to treat ringworm. Used elsewhere to treat skin parasites, constipation, venereal disease, kidney stones, and asthma.
