Coccoloba uvifera

(Seagrape)

Polygonaceae

Traditional remedy or use: Used to treat dysentery, as a febrifuge and as an astringent.  Made into beverages, used for leather tanning, and to dye cotton.  Wood has been used to make cabinets and as fuel. Leaves were once used as paper and plates.

Modern remedy or use: Being studied as a treatment for diabetes and cancer.

Comments: Fruit has a taste similar to apple.
